Embracing the unpredictable...

Some sessions feel like they go exactly as planned… and others turn into something even better than you could have imagined.

This Black Balsam Knob maternity session was one of those “trust the process” kind of days.

From the moment we started planning, we knew we were working with unpredictable mountain weather. If you’ve ever been to Black Balsam Knob in North Carolina, you know it can shift quickly—sun one minute, fog the next, and wind that makes everything feel alive and a little wild in the best way.

Planning for Unpredictable Weather

Going into this session, I made it a priority to stay in close communication with my client. Instead of locking into a rigid plan, we built flexibility into everything.

We talked through:

  • Backup timing options in case of storms or heavy fog
  • What kind of weather would still photograph beautifully (spoiler: a lot of it does)
  • Outfit choices that would work in wind and cooler mountain temps
  • And most importantly, expectations—so she felt confident no matter what the sky did

That communication made all the difference. Instead of stress, there was trust. Instead of worry, there was excitement.

When the Weather Doesn’t Cooperate

On the day of the session, we got exactly what the mountains wanted to give us—shifting clouds, pockets of mist, and bursts of wind rolling across the ridgeline.

Not the “perfect” forecast. But honestly? Perfect for photos.

We adjusted in real time: Waiting out heavier wind gusts before key portraits

Moving between locations on the ridge to find more sheltered spots

Leaning into movement instead of fighting it (flowing dresses + wind = magic)

This is where experience matters most as a photographer, not forcing conditions, but working with them.

Creating Space for a Comfortable Experience

One of my biggest goals during any maternity session is making sure my clients feel calm, seen, and taken care of.

Throughout the shoot, I checked in often—making sure she was warm enough, comfortable, and happy with how everything was unfolding. We moved at a relaxed pace and allowed space for breaks when needed. That ease translated directly into the photos.

You can’t pose real comfort. You can’t fake connection. It has to be felt.

The Final Gallery: Worth Every Shift in the Forecast

When I delivered the final gallery, my client’s reaction was exactly why I love what I do—she was in love with her images.

The fog, the wind, the softness of the light… everything that felt “unpredictable” on location became the exact reason the gallery feels so timeless and emotional.

Black Balsam Knob gave us something wild and beautiful, and I’m so grateful I got to document this season for her.

Final Thoughts

This session is a reminder that the best photos don’t always come from perfect conditions—they come from adaptability, communication, and trust.
