Do Brides-to-Be Really Need an Engagement Session?
Many brides to be wonder if an engagement session is necessary or just extra. I often get asked, “Do we really need an engagement session if we will already have wedding photos?” My answer every time is yes, and here is why.
What Is an Engagement Session?
An engagement session is usually a one to two hour photo shoot for a couple that has recently become engaged. It often takes place three to ten months before the wedding and celebrates both the couple and the exciting new chapter they are beginning.
For my couples, an engagement session is not optional. It is included in all of my full service wedding photography packages. I believe in it so strongly that I want every bride and groom to have this experience before their wedding day.

Why Engagement Sessions Matter
Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera
The number one reason I offer engagement sessions is to help my couples feel comfortable in front of the camera. I use many of the same poses during a wedding day, so this practice session allows couples to trust me, relax, and feel confident.
Practice for the Wedding Day
Engagement sessions give us time to try out poses like dips, spins, or twirls without the pressure of a strict wedding timeline. It is low stakes and fun, which helps me learn what works best for you as a couple and helps you feel more natural on the wedding day.
Capture Your Love Story in Everyday Clothes
Wedding photos are stunning and formal, but engagement photos show you in a more authentic way. Jeans, sundresses, or a chic matching set all work beautifully. I often recommend bringing two outfits. One casual and one slightly dressier but not formal. The engagement season is short and sweet, and these images become meaningful keepsakes of who you are right now.
Use the Photos for Practical Things
Engagement photos are incredibly useful. My couples use them for save the dates, invitations, wedding websites, guest books, décor, and social media. I love when couples update their profiles or display these photos at their reception. It is such a fun way to celebrate this season.
Strengthen the Connection with Your Photographer
This is one of the biggest benefits. An engagement session gives us the chance to connect before the wedding. You learn my posing style and communication, and I learn what makes you comfortable, what you love, and any insecurities you may have. Beyond the photos, I get to hear your love story and build a genuine connection with you. All of this makes your wedding day portraits seamless and stress free.
Common Misconceptions About Engagement Sessions
It is so normal for couples to feel nervous about the idea of an engagement session. Many worry their photos will look just like their wedding day portraits, when in reality engagement photos have a completely different feel. They are relaxed, playful, and often more true to who you are in everyday life.
Some couples believe the session is unnecessary, but the value goes far beyond just having extra photos. It is a chance to slow down, enjoy each other’s company, and get comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day.
The most common fear I hear is, “We are awkward” or “We are not photogenic.” Honestly, almost every couple tells me this at the beginning. And almost every couple tells me something completely different at the end: that they actually had fun and were surprised by how natural it felt. I believe that comes from more than posing and direction. It comes from making you feel seen, heard, and connected to each other throughout the experience. Those genuine moments are what make the photos so meaningful.
Why I Include Engagement Sessions in All Full Wedding Packages
For me it is not just about delivering images. It is about creating an experience. Engagement sessions help my couples feel more confident, more connected, and more relaxed on the wedding day. That is why I include them in all of my full service packages. I have seen firsthand how much of a difference they make.
Outfit Tips:
Dress like yourself and coordinate without being too matchy. Solid, neutral colors tend to photograph best. I recommend a dress that flows or spins because it adds beautiful movement to your photos.
Timing:
Golden hour is beautiful, but it is not the only option. A professional photographer should know how to create magic in any lighting scenario.
Location Ideas:
Choose a location that reflects you as a couple. If you love adventure, consider a mountaintop in East Tennessee. If you enjoy quiet Saturday mornings together, pick a local park in central North Carolina. If you love the city, plan your session in Charlotte or Winston Salem during golden hour. For an elegant look, rent a space like the Allandale Mansion in Johnson City, Tennessee.
